Understanding Mass Shootings

Within the span of most of our memories mass shootings have gone from an unspeakable tragedy to a well discussed (but still tragic) feature of our society.

Over the last two decades the terminology of mass shootings has developed greater sophistication. The standard definition of "mass shooting" is any attack that results in three or more casualties, where "casualties" refers to both wounded and deceased victims.

Following these standards this map depicts all mass shootings in the United States from 1982 to early 2019.
